Red kite candy1/4/2023 ![]() ![]() We noted the pride with which Caila pronounced, “We’re father and daughter.” The world could use a little more of that, it seems to me. But with the aroma of this luscious candy enveloping us, we forgave him, and all football field rivalries were laid aside. When Mike smiled at Hubby’s Penn State hat, we asked, of course, if he were a Nittany Lion. Mike and the couple’s daughter Caila greeted us that day. Mike and daughter Caila welcome guests in the store. Although the company still has a low profile nationwide-it is by design a small, artisanal shop-the Red Kite story has been widely reported in the New England press and is beginning to get well deserved attention beyond. Follow this link to read their inspiring story. ![]() Seriously.įounded in 2009, Red Kite is a family business, the invention of Elaine McCabe, who operates it with her husband Mike. ![]() If you happen to be anywhere near Bradford, VT, you need to stop at Red Kite Candy. We fell so in love with Red Kite Candy that last fall, on our way home from the Maritimes, my beau-frère and belle-soeur* made sure to shepherd us to the tiny factory that produces them. However… shall I simply say that once we tasted these marvelous morsels from Vermont, all bets were off? I love the vintage logo and wrappers. Nor have I been seduced by the trend to attach “salted caramel” to every sort of confection or dessert or (for heaven’s sake) coffee. I enjoy classic English toffee, especially at Christmas, but caramels have never been my vice of choice. Thank you, Caila! We love your bootstrapping spirit, and we're thankful for everyone who makes this world a little sweeter.Last summer, our Vermont family came to visit bearing a gift… a sweet (pun intended) looking container filled with what my beau-frère* pronounced “the best caramels and toffee you’ll ever eat.”Īs you read this, keep in mind that I am by no means a candy addict, unless we are talking Neuhaus chocolates, which we actually ate in lieu of dinner on our last night in Paris in 2008 (yes, they were that memorable). There’s always a need for innovation, compassion, and just making the most of each day. Not all of these problems or opportunities will go away with the virus. I hope people can keep up this bootstrapping spirit. What changes do you hope to see in a post-quarantine world? Especially with Mother’s Day coming up, this is a great time to give a gift because it will instantly generate another gift to a healthcare worker. You can choose from several hospitals who have agreed to receive and distribute these gifts. You can include a message that we’ll handwrite. Right now, for every purchase over $25, we’re giving a gift to frontline healthcare workers on your behalf. ![]() What is the most important thing that people can do to help support you and/or your business? We washing all of our deliveries now, only family members are allowed in to our facility…but when put in perspective, I’m mostly grateful for what hasn’t changed. Most of the ways our lives have changed are things everyone recognizes, like worrying about older friends and family members, and changing shopping habits. How has your life and livelihood changed in the time of Covid-19? I’ve been in this role for 2 years now, but involved in the family business for about 6 years. What do you do? For how long have you been doing it? I’m Caila McCabe and I live in Thetford, VT. Please contact us directly if you would like to be featured!* *I f you're just finding our "Staying at Home in Woodstock" series, welcome! During the COVID-19 crisis, we are connecting with local businesses, entrepreneurs, and non-profits to help encourage and support one another through this difficult time. Today we are delighted to share our interview with Caila McCabe of Red Kite Candy. ![]()
